“Character assets aren’t just 3D models—they’re the visual foundation of how players connect with game worlds. Whether it’s photorealistic or stylized, every polygon matters.”

Marcus Thornton, Senior Character Artist

14 Years Creating Game-Ready Character Assets

Marcus is a character artist who’s spent the better part of a decade and a half building 3D models that actually ship. He’s worked on over 25 commercially released games, from indie projects to AAA titles, and understands what it takes to deliver polished assets on deadline. His specialty? Taking concept art and turning it into production-ready character models that work seamlessly across Unity, Unreal, and proprietary engines.

At Pixel Forge on the Gold Coast, he leads a team focused on outsourced character creation for international studios. But he’s not just managing—he’s hands-on, modeling characters, rigging skeletons, and mentoring the next generation of Australian game artists. His work spans hyper-realistic fantasy characters to stylized indie aesthetics, and he’s known for being efficient without cutting corners.

Areas of Expertise

3D Character Modeling

High-polygon sculpting and optimization for game engines. Marcus builds characters that look fantastic in-engine while maintaining efficient topology for animation and performance.

2D Character Art

Concept art and 2D design for stylized games. From initial character concepts to finalized sprite sheets, he combines color theory with clear visual communication.

Rigging & Skeleton Setup

Creating joint systems and control rigs that animators love working with. Proper rigging saves animation time and ensures characters move naturally.

Game Engine Integration

Pipeline optimization for Unity, Unreal, and proprietary engines. He knows how to prepare assets that work seamlessly across platforms and handle performance constraints.

Art Direction & Leadership

Guiding creative vision and mentoring team members. As content director at Pixel Forge, Marcus oversees quality control and ensures every asset exceeds studio standards.

Production Efficiency

Delivering high-quality assets under tight deadlines without sacrificing detail. Marcus has shipped 25+ commercial titles and understands the constraints of real-world game development.

What He Focuses On

Stylized Characters

From cartoon aesthetics to exaggerated proportions. He understands how to push stylization while keeping characters readable and appealing.

Photorealistic Assets

High-fidelity human characters and realistic environments. Marcus excels at capturing subtle details that make photorealistic characters feel alive.

Fantasy & Creature Design

Fantasy races, monsters, and non-human characters. He’s skilled at blending anatomical knowledge with creative fantasy elements.

Mobile & Indie Optimization

Creating assets that work on limited-budget platforms. Marcus knows how to deliver quality on mobile, web, and indie game budgets.

His Approach

Marcus doesn’t believe in “good enough.” Every character model that leaves Pixel Forge is production-ready, meaning it’s been optimized for performance, rigged for animation, and tested across the target engine. He combines technical precision with creative problem-solving—if a design concept can’t work in-engine, he’ll find a way to make it work anyway.

He’s driven by understanding game pipelines from start to finish. This isn’t just about making beautiful models—it’s about making assets that serve the game. That means working closely with animators, engineers, and designers to ensure characters fit seamlessly into the production workflow.

Mentoring matters to him too. The Australian game industry is growing, and Marcus is committed to helping the next generation of artists develop the skills needed to work on international projects. Whether it’s topology optimization, rigging workflows, or navigating the demands of commercial game development, he’s built Pixel Forge as a place where artists can grow while delivering exceptional work.
